Mount Athos is an autonomous part of the Greek State, located on the peninsula of Mount Athos in Halkidiki, Macedonia.
It includes twenty Holy Monasteries and other monastic institutions and is unofficially designated as an "Autonomous Monastic State". It is the center of Orthodox Christian monasticism with monuments of great national, historical, religious, literary and cultural value on a global scale.
All the Holy Monasteries of Mount Athos are religious spiritual institutions and all are characterized as "Sovereign", "Royal", "Patriarchal" and "Stavropegian".
The Athonite Monasteries today are all convents. In the past, some were quirky.
The number of twenty Monasteries, as always recognized by the Church and the State, can neither increase nor decrease. Of these, seventeen are Greek, one Serbian, one Russian and one Bulgarian.
Mount Athos is the only living Museum of Byzantine Culture in the world. Only men are allowed to enter, but everyone can visit it from the sea with fishing boats and luxury yachts on the daily cruises that are organized.
